17th century witch hunter Giles Redferne (Richard E Grant) has a warlock (Julian Sands) shackled with thumbscrews and locked in a tower awaiting execution, but the warlock manages to escape landing up in the contemporary LA in the home of waitress Kassandra (Lori Singer of Footloose fame – and SFL5 short, Little Victim). The warlock is looking for the Grand Grimoire, the witches book that will give him the ultimate power he seeks. The warlock starts a killing spree in his quest, and is soon pursued by Redferne, who has also managed to travel forward in time to try and stop him. With Kassandra in tow, to guide him through modern America, he does his best to prevent the impending apocalypse.
This is one of the early features from writer David Twohy (Pitch Black) and director Steve Miner (Lake Placid). It would be easy to find fault with this film, with its dodgy dialogue, special effects and eighties' fashions, but it is good harmless fun, like a low budget Highlander crossed with an episode of Buffy. It may not have the intensity of the creators' later works, but for some eighties nostalgia you could do a lot worse.
Warlock is out on DVD now from Second Sight and is available from Play and all good retailers.
