Brits are very good at going to the darker, more sinister side in their creative endeavours, especially when it comes to storytelling.
Even with a positive title like Utopia, its dystopic counterpart isn't that far away, which is hardly surprising as the home of a once expansive empire resembles more one of the third-world countries they created as a result of their imperialism. Karma can be such a bitch.
Thankfully we still have our creativity, about the only industry we do have, apart from weapons, pharmaceuticals and banks, which is fitting given the story of the six-part Utopia series that recently showed on Channel 4.
A couple of computer nerds, a gobby school truant and a young woman get thrown together when they become involved with a much-sought-after original manuscript for the second part of a massive cult graphic novel that involves conspiracies and predictions of further conspiracies about ties with the government and some rather shady pharmaceutical scientists and their plans to sort out the world's ever-increasing population.
The quartet are pursued by a ruthless killer sent by The Network, until they are joined with the elusive (and psychotic) Jessica Hyde.
Although the show has its fair share of graphic violence, and a bleak story line, it also has moments of delicious black humour made all the more palatable by great cinematography and a vibrant colour palate that does make it look like a comic book.
If you are wary of the annual pandemic scares and the rush of vaccines to the market, then this is right up your street, and is highly recommended for anyone that enjoys a good dystopian tale where the geeks are the heroes.
