SFL10 Day 7

SCI-FI-LONDON 10 - Dean Haglund

While huge numbers of the UK and world's population were being entranced by the nuptials of William and Kate, we were catching up on some well-needed sleep after our Royal Wedding All-nighter. Even though it was a public holiday, because the city on lock down for the royal event, we decided to start our events a little later than usual, and we started the day with the perfect antidote to royal wedding fever with a down-and-dirty Roger Corman produced double bill, SHARKTOPUS and DINOSHARK.

Despite all the travel restrictions in place around the West End this was surprisingly well attended. Clearly we weren't the only ones seeking respite from the nation's emotional outpourings and excuse for a day off to party.

As part of our Italian Fantascienza strand we showed ATLANTIS DOWN from director Max Bartoli. This low-budget psychological thriller features the festival's favourite polymath Dean Haglund, who introduced the film along with the director.

Max took a Q&A after the screening while Dean was preparing for the evening's next event, Outstanding, an evening of geek-friendly stand up comedy hosted by the now-regular guest Rob Deb, whose comical insights into the world we know and love always prove a great hit.

SCI-FI-LONDON 10 - Bec Hill
Other comedians (and comediennes) on the night were Helen Keen, who breathlessly explained the links between the US space race, Nazism, Satanism and Indiana Jones, most of which was actually factual. James Kettle, on the other hand, tended to make up his "facts" about Doctor Who. Bec Hill captivated the room with her vivacity and silliness, while Robert Commiskey (an American) cast aspersions on his ex.

The evening finished with Dean Haglund doing an improv set with Natalie (Miss Ballooniverse), who also appeared in one of this year's 48 Hour Challenge films, which just missed out on the short list and also featured Dean in a cameo role done over Skype (yup, he phoned it in).

The scene they had to create was a confession by Kate to Will in their honeymoon suite, except Natalie didn't know what the three elements of the confession, suggested by the audience, were and which she had to guess. Who'd have thought that the Duchess of Cambridge was related to Jesus, was addicted to World of Warcraft and had Tourettes?
