We love games here at SFL AND we especially love films that look like games so when news of the world’s first pixel animated feature film reached us, we had to find out more.

With Rock of Ages coming soon to cinemas, fans wanting an extra slice of comedic 80s music pie should check out The Hit Squad. Starring Roddy Stones and his washed up 80s band, the film will use low-resolution pixelated style graphics combined with the latest 3D HD animation in a modern retro blend that reflects the ‘Family Guy meets Nintendo at a Spinal Tap orgy’ storyline. In a desperate bid to stop their failing studio from falling into the hands of their more successful rivals, Roddy and The Hit Squad must attempt to make $1million in a week with one last hit record. Cue bad pixelated perms, pixelated scenes of excess and a very funny pixelated journey of skulduggery, sex and synthesized music in search of fame, fortune and of course copious amounts of class A drugs.

Produced by the Super Pixel Brothers who have already gained a huge following on YouTube with their animated comedy shorts and who are featured on the Machinima directors programme, The Hit Squad’s writer and director Chris Blundell told us "In a world of sequels and rip-offs, I wanted to create something totally unique whilst showing that a quality scripted film, regardless of budget can engage audiences, such as South Park did in the late 90s." As the indie game scene continues to grow from strength to strength with titles like Minecraft demonstrating the creative and prettier side of playing with pixels, it’s surprising that no-one has attempted to create a fully pixelated movie before now but happily Chris and the team have taken on the challenge, with Chris doing all the animation himself.

But now he needs your help! Of course, every film needs some budget no matter how tiny. The Hit Squad is looking to raise $25,000 before the 3rd June and has turned to crowdfunding through IndieGoGo. Chatting with Assistant Producer Laura Mulhern, she revealed that the audience have a huge role to play in the success of the film; "Not only do we want people to invest money, that’s lovely of course but we really want to build a community around The Hit Squad. People can become a part of the film doing voice overs or having pixelated on screen appearances but we also hope people will join us for future live shows or social media parties etc. as the long-term plan of The Hit Squad is to continue with the brand as an online series which we’d love people to enjoy too."
