There’s a secret area in New York where a rather unusual community have made their home, yet remain unseen to the humans. In a clever tale from the Eisner Award winning graphic novelist and illustrator Bill Willingham, Fabletown is a magically concealed area of the Big Apple where exiled refugees from the lands of myths, legends and fairy tales live.
This winter, multi-award winning developers TellTale Games will breathe life into the Fables comics with their brand new episodic videogame series and the first glimpses look darkly fantastic. Though prior knowledge of the comics, with the same heavy, angular, cleanly stunning aesthetics as will be seen in the game, will of course provide a deeper and perhaps richer experience, it’s not essential to have engaged with the series before playing as the story is set before the events in the books, whilst many of the characters will already be familiar as can be found on children’s bookshelves around the world.
Starring Bigby Wolf as the sheriff of Fabletown, under the watchful eye of deputy mayor Snow White, he must try and keep the community from tearing itself apart or revealing itself to the ‘mundies’ AKA non-magical fairy tale folk, as a civil war rumbles back in their homelands. Unlike their cartoon, Disney-sweetened portrayals, Willingham’s Fables are reimagined in a rather more violent, sexy, and complicated way where marital problems, crime, control of magical powers (including the use of glamour; a magic that must be used by non-human Fables to hide their physical features), jobs, bureaucracy, and allegiances, all should make for some gripping, gritty drama in the videogame.
Depending on which choices a player makes during conversations, or what action they take will have lasting consequence. With all of their powers intact, encounters between the Big Bad Wolf and law-breaking Fables should also provide some slick, magical action. From a chain-smoking member of 'The Three Little Pigs,' to a car-stealing Mr. Toad itching for his next wild ride, The Wolf Among Us will examine the lives of beings straight from the pages of myth and lore, now trying to survive on the meanest and most run-down streets of New York City. Though he’s the sheriff, Bigby’s nature means the player will have to decide whether he plays nice or plays big and bad. Just how far will the wolf go to protect the community?
The season premiere of The Wolf Among Us will make its debut on X360 LIVE Marketplace, PlayStation Network, and on PC and Mac from the Telltale Online Store as well as other digital distribution outlets.
