Dawn of the Planet of the Apes on DVD

After watching the original films way back in the day my enthusiasm for the PoA movies dwindled after the Tim Burton version, which I found a little problematic, aesthetically, to say the least.

I was a little worried about popping in the DVD, in case I was about to subject myself to hours of tedious “let’s pretend to be angry apes” guff, but what I actually discovered was a continuing story for the modern age, featuring top-class acting from the ape characters, with Andy Serkis heading the group of impressively convincing actors.

Visually, the film is more like being in a beautifully-crafted CGI cutscene. Everything is stunningly shaded, and the world is lush and dystopian, highlighting the struggle for survival apes and humans share alike, in a thoughtful, if not entirely original, light.

Worth a watch if you’re a fan of the series. This is definitely my favourite Planet of the Apes reboot film so far, largely in part due to the phenomenal lead characters.

Released on DVD and Blu-ray November 24th
